Worship at Home – Sunday 16th August 2020

We are not all able to gather physically to worship today. However, we remember that although we may be apart, we can still worship together. Here are some resources and suggestions to help you worship at home and join together as the body of Christ. Thank you to all our contributors.

We have recorded an act of worship for the 10th Sunday after Trinity, you can download the order of service here to follow along.

The readings for the tenth Sunday after Trinity

  • Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 56:1,6-8
  • Psalm: Psalm 67
  • New Testament: Romans 11:1-2a,29-32
  • Gospel Reading: Matthew 15:21-28

Collect for the tenth Sunday after Trinity

Let your merciful ears, O Lord,
be open to the prayers of your humble servants;
and that they may obtain their petitions
make them to ask such things as shall please you;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Music

Our hymn today, There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, was recorded by the musicians of St Martin in the Fields. The voluntary, details below, was recorded by the Director of Music at St Mary’s Beaminster, Martin Schellenberg. It was recorded on the organ St Mary’s Beaminster. You can also listen to another hymn, No 2, A Great and Mighty Wonder : Tune Es is ein Ros’ Entsprungen (for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary 15th August).

A Great and Mighty Wonder
Es ist ein Ros’ Entsprungen
Partita on a Spanish Marian Theme

Martin writes: As usual, there are two organ pieces this week. The first is a very gentle Chorale Prelude on the tune Es ist ein Ros’ Entsprungen by Johannes Brahms (1833-97). The translation of this is Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming and the tune was originally harmonised by Michael Praetorius in 1609. The second piece is a Partita on a Spanish Marian Theme by Bernado Pasquini (1637-1710). The five short variations use different colours of the organ and ends boldly on full organ.
