Advent Reflection – Day 13

An Advent Reflection by Jacky Bush Churchwarden of St Mary’s Netherbury.

Read

Luke 1:46-49 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

Reflect

I find it hard to imagine this response to the news that Mary has just received. One would expect at the very least more questions. Why me? How will I be affected? Then probably fear about what people will say, not least her betrothed. And yet, here she is not only compliant but rejoicing and praising God. What and amazing young woman. Yet why would we expect God to select anyone of lesser character to bear His son? An example to us all to respond to the unexpected and difficult situation by accepting that God has it all in hand and we should trust and praise him.

Pray

Father of love, through your most Holy Spirit, Mary the Jewish girl conceived your Son; May His beauty, His humanity, His all transforming grace be born in us, and may we never despise the strange and stirring gentleness of your Almighty Power. Amen

Act

In the situations you face today look for some opportunity to praise God and say thank you for the good things his has done for you.
