“‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’” – Matthew 2:6.
Reflection
Bethlehem, of all places. ‘By no means the least’ but hardly the most likely spot for God to choose for the birth of His only son.
So began the idea, repeated and repeated throughout the gospels, that each one of us, unworthy as we know we are, is chosen as the object of God’s unimaginable love. All we have to do is to accept that reality and trust in His love – as present as and closer than our breath. That’s the promise of the first Christmas in Bethlehem. All we ever have to do is trust, whatever the odds.
Pray
Lord God, Father and Friend, grow in me to trust in Your unfailing love, whatever today and this Christmas may bring.
Act
Today and each day of Christmas, may I find one action or thought which reminds family, a friend or neighbour to trust and rest in God’s love.
