Advent Reflection 16

“Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.'” – Matthew 2:8.

Reflection

Nothing much has changed in the last 2000 years. Herod may as well have written this fiction on the side of a bus.

If Herod was a diligent caring ruler Jesus would have been no threat to him. Blaming the “other” is what poor leaders do to deflect from their own shortcomings, or the shortcomings of their followers.

“It’s not lining the banker friend’s pockets at the expense of the nation that’s to blame; it’s not long term lack of investment in education and infrastructure that’s to blame; it’s not cruel austerity policies that’s to blame for hungry children. It’s the immigrants. It’s their fault. Close the borders and all will be well.” – we might hear them say.

Pray

Almighty and merciful God,
whose Son became a refugee and had no place to call his own;
look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger,
homeless and hungry.
Bless those who work to bring them relief;
inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts;
and guide the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
