Advent Reflections 2022 #11

Advent is…

In his classic book The Dynamics of Faith, Paul Tillich the great theologian and philosopher of religion of the twentieth century says that often it is in moments of sheer helplessness that we can all experience the transforming power of grace, of God’s power to help: “Grace strikes us when we are in great pain and restlessness…It strikes us when, year after year, the longed-for perfection of life does not appear, when the old compulsions reign within us as they have for decades, when despair destroys all joy and courage.”

The task we as individuals may have to consider this Advent is to how to hold on to hope, is how to wait and watch with patience and simple trust when everything cries out against waiting, against watching, how to look for and to see any signs of God at work in the world and in us. And all this so that the helplessness which sometimes can surround and threaten to overpower any one of does not in fact overpower us and then, thanks to divine grace, we can emerge victorious in the time still to come.
